Cooler weather makes for good fishing

May 21, 2015

After a windy end to last week reports are a little on the skinny side this week but I will go with what I have as well as letting you know what happened with Tightlines Fishing Club last month.

Firstly the fish:

The main species caught in the blustery conditions was bream. They have popped up all through the passage with some good sized fish being taken at the ripples, Ningi Creek, Avon wreck and in the Meldale area. Wayne Lafranke from the Pine Rivers Fishing Club was on a prefish for this weekends comp landing some good bream and summer whiting from the Donnybrook area. (I will have the results of their comp in next weeks report)

As previously mentioned the summer whiting have pushed up into the shallower waters in the middle of the passage so if it’s a feed of bigger whiting you are chasing try with live worms in any of the inner creek mouths like Elimbah Creek, Glass House Mountains Creek, Hussey Creek and Coochin Creek. Just keep in mind that if you are in these areas make sure that you are not in a big boat as the water is very shallow and the sand banks continually move.  Also make sure you know where the green zones are as there are a couple in this middle section. Ignorance is not an excuse and fisheries patrol these areas regularly along with Queensland Parks.

Snapper went very quiet this week but mainly because of the conditions not from lack of fish, seems like dawn and dusk with corresponding tide changes will give you the best chance with these tasty fish.

Skirmish Point was the only place that recorded any decent catches of tailor but the size was down a little. This again could be a result of the conditions, let’s hope next weekend is better.

Tightlines Fishing Club:

The May comp went well with a mix of species coming in, bream, estuary cod, sole/flounder and flathead all being caught. Well done to all the prize winners and competitors. The June comp is a little different than normal with it being a photo based month. This way all the catch and release fishos can also have a chance at some of the great prizes up for grabs. Contact the two Michaels on the Tightlines Facebook page for all the entry details.
